In this post, you  will find an interesting activity to practice mathematical competence  in your English  class with your pupils. Here teachers can find a whole activity with objetives, contents, materials used,  procedure, and assesment, explained step by step.
You can use it and modify it at your convenience.

 Mary´s Birthday

Age: 12 years old. 6th grade of primary school

Multiple Intelligences involved: logical/ mathematical.
Objectives:
               -To develop reasoning.
               - To foster critical thinking and solving mathematical problems.
                - To make the students aware of the different prices that you can find in different places for the same product.
Resources:
-Flashcards with different sets of supermarkets and toy stores.
- A Piece of paper for each group to do calculations and a pen or pencil.
- Blackboard to correct the activity.
Description of the activity:
Introduction
One of our classmates called Maria is turning 12 next week and we have decided to make a party.
Organization of the class: we will make groups of four.
 Procedure
We are going to design some chart shaped cards, in which we will present the children to different supermarkets and toy stores. These charts contain three different toy stores with different items. The same item is going to be sold in each store but at different price. They will have to buy a present and make a cake, so they will have to select the ingredients among different supermarkets and they only have £20 budget for each group.

Step one- We will have to divide the class in groups of four. Children must make a shopping list and get three items from the supermarket and choose a present from the toy store.
Step two – Children will need to buy the items in different supermarkets and stores in order not to exceed the budget proposed and get the cheapest price.
Step three- With the different items selected from the supermarkets, they will have to make a cake with eggs, flour, oil or butter, and jam.
Step four- They will have to select a present from a toy store, depending on remaining budget.
Step five- Finally, they will have to explain in groups what items they have chosen, specifying where they were bought.  We will check the calculations on the blackboard.

Assessment
The teacher must play the role as a simple observer, supporting and giving the necessary feedback, especially with the spelling of difficult words.
In this type of activities, it is important to evaluate different aspects, team work and individual work, pronunciation, etc.  For this purpose, we are going to use the following chart:

Low learning
Average learning
Good learning
Excellent job
Marks
Individual work

Pronunciation

Intonation

Group work

Organization

Estimative scale
Low work
Average
Knowledge
Good
Learning
Excellent job
 Total score
1-5
6-10
11-15
16-20

I hope you enjoy the idea.
